Brad Friedel was in goal for Aston Villa, which defeated defending English Premier League champion Manchester United, 1-0, for its first win at Old Trafford since 1983. Friedel had a relatively quite afternoon. He was called upon to stop Bulgarian Dimitar Berbatov late in the game. The big defensive play was made by Stewart Downing, who cleared Nemanja Vidic's header off the line. The loss left United three points behind Chelsea, which could only manage a 3-3 tie at home with Everton, which had Tim Howard in goal.
Elsewhere in England, Clint Dempsey
went the distance for Fulham in its 1-1 tie at Burnley while Jozy Altidore came on as a
second-half sub for Hull City in its 0-0 tie with Blackburn.
