Bocanegra loses starting role

Carlos Bocanegra's dubious yellow card picked up against Lyon in late November has proven to be costly. Since serving a one-game suspension for picking up his third card in the last 10 games, the U.S. national team captain has yet to get back in the lineup. Frenchman Romain Danze, who normally places on the right side, has taken over at left back.

Bocanegra missed the 2-1 win at Nancy and the three games after that, including Wednesday's 2-0 loss at Sochaux. The loss left Rennes tied for eighth place at the halfway mark.

Bocanegra has played in 14 of Rennes' 19 games. Last season, the former UCLA star played all 38 Ligue 1 games.
