Excelsior Mouscron, which has played in the Jupiler Pro League since 1996, has quit Belgium's top-flight league in the middle of the season.

The club is bankrupt with debts of more than $1 million, and its players refused to play its last two games. The players, among 100 salaried employees at the club, will become free agents.

Leader Anderlecht hopes to sign Maxime Lestienne, while Greek club PAOK and England's West Bromwich are interested in Nigerian-born Bahrain international John Jaycee Okwunwannee.

Mouscron's results will be nullified. The Hurlus were ninth in the Jupiler Pro League.
