Ruiz leads cash-strapped Puebla into semifinals

[INTERLIGA] In Puebla's opening game at the 2010 InterLiga, former MLS star Carlos Ruiz was the scorer with two goals in a 4-1 over Tigres. In Wednesday's second game, the Guatemalan was the provider, serving the cross that Nicolas Olivera converted for the lone goal in a 1-0 win over Jaguares at Houston's Robertson Stadium. With the two wins, Puebla clinched a berth in next week's semifinals that will decide two berths in this year's Copa Libertadores. Not bad for a team whose players refused to train on the eve of the tournament because they had not been paid.

In the nightcap, Jose Maria Basanta's goal in the 89th minute earned Monterrey a 1-1 tie with city rival Tigres.

Edgar Castillo started for Tigres, making him the lone American to play in the InterLiga.

Herculez Gomez, who spent six seasons in MLS, signed this week with Puebla but didn't play in the win over Jaguares.
