Striker Salvador Cabanas, a key member of World Cup-bound Paraguay, was in critical condition Monday after being shot in the head at a Mexico City bar. Cabanas, who plays for Mexico's Club America and was South America's Player of the Year in 2007, was conscious when he arrived at the hospital, where he was being operated on to remove the bullet

Mexico City Attorney General Miguel Angel Mancera said two suspects were detained but it wasn't clear whether they were robbing Cabanas or were in an argument with him. Cabanas has been playing in Mexico since joining Jaguares in 2003. He joined Club America in 2006 and has scored 125 goals in 218 matches in Mexico. Read the original story...
