Nearby mayor to fight Houston Dynamo stadium plans

Plans to build a soccer stadium for MLS's Houston Dynamo in the Galleria area of Houston have met with opposition from the neighboring city of Bellaire.

Bellaire Mayor Cindy Siegel said she was blindsided by Midway Companies' plans -- very much in their initial stages -- to develop an area of land near the I-610/Highway 59 interchange and build a facility that could host MLS games and serve as a concert venue. "I live in a single family home, I like to enjoy my backyard, and I like to enjoy my pool in the evening," Mayor Siegel said. "Would I want to be listening to a soccer game or a concert going on?"

Houston City Council member Anne Clutterbuck, who represents the area in question, is a Dynamo season-ticket holder and loves the idea of a stadium in her district. Nor are all Bellaire residents opposed to the plans. "As long as they develop that area,"said Bellaire resident Frank Bello, "because right now we have nothing there. A couple of years back, we had problems with crime and vandalism in that area."
