[WORLD CUP COUNTDOWN]Not surprisingly, Nigeria became the first World Cup finalist to dump its head coach, parting company with Shuaibu Amodu following the Africa Cup of Nations in Angola. The name being mentioned as a possible replacement is young Frenchman Herve Renard, who led Zambia to first place in its group at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The move marks the second time Amodu has led the Super Eagles to the World Cup finals but been fired before the tournament started.

The same thing happened in 2002 when Nigeria failed to reach the final of the Africa Cup of Nations in Mali, and Amodu was dumped.

In Angola, Nigeria finished third with a 1-0 win over Algeria in Saturday's third-place game.
