Unlike then-U.S. coach Steve Sampson, who dropped John Harkes from the 1998 World Cup team after learning that his captain had an affair with teammate Eric Wynalda's wife, England coach Fabio Capello simply took John Terry's armband away in the aftermath of revelations that Terry had an affair with the mother of England teammate Wayne Bridge's son.

“John Terry is one of the most important players for England,” Capello said. “It is time for England to move on. It is all over."

The 29-year-old Chelsea defender will keep his spot in the middle of the England defense alongside Rio Ferdinand, whom Capello has appointed as the new England captain. “I will speak with Rio in March,” Capello said. “We will speak about the new captain then. I want to speak with them before everything. Usually I prefer to speak with the players, not the journalists.”
