[MLS] The New York Red Bulls waived Danny Cepero, one of the unlikely stars of their run to the MLS Cup 2008 final, along with two other players on Friday.

Cepero, taken in the 2007 MLS Supplemental Draft out of Penn, was with the Red Bulls for three seasons.

His departure leaves Bouna Coundoul as the only goalie under contract. Former USL-1 star Bill Gaudette accompanied New York on its trip to Spain.

Costa Rican Carlos Johnson and Argentine Walter Garcia, both defenders, were also waived. They joined New York in 2009.

New York also did not pick up midfielder Matthew Mbuta’s option. He completed his first full season with New York after signing late in the 2008 campaign from Crystal Palace Baltimore.
