Bayer Leverkusen goalie Rene Adler appears to have won the battle for the starting job on the German national team for the World Cup. He will the goalkeeper for Wednesday’s friendly against Argentina.
Coach Joachim Loew had previously said that the goalkeeper against Argentina would likely be his No. 1 choice, and goalkeeping coach Andreas Koepke confirmed as much on Monday. “Rene is No. 1 at the moment," said Koepke. "He has it in his own hands whether he is the No. 1 at the World Cup."
Adler, 25, should get the nod ahead of Manuel Neuer of Schalke and Tim Wiese of Werder Bremen. Hannover goalie Robert Enke, another national team contender, committed suicide last fall.
