On a day when 28 of the 32 World Cup finalists were in action, the biggest surprise look place at Munich's Allianz Arena, where Diego Maradona's Argentina stunned Germany, 1-0, on Gonzalo Higuain's goal in the 45th minute.
The performance was perhaps Argentina's best under Maradona. "We needed to show ourselves we could do what we did today," he said. "We wanted to show against a good team that we are alive and we understand the moment of the Argentine national team, which has not won the World Cup for 24 years."
Germany, on the other hand, played poorly. Young Mesut Oezil was ineffective and replaced by Brazilian-born Cacau. "Our mistake was not to take more risks up front," said Germany cap
tain Michael Ballack.
