[ENGLAND] Bankrupt Portsmouth may be headed for relegation -- with or without any penalty points deducted -- and there is some doubt whether it will survive until the end of the season, but it continues to show signs of life in the FA Cup, where it booked a semifinal date at Wembley with a 2-0 win over Birmingham City on a pair of goals by French sub Frederic Piquionne.
Afterwards, Portsmouth manager Avram Grant praised his players and the club's fans.
"I am just so pleased for everyone connected with the club," Grant said. "The players have been through so much, not knowing what was going to happen next or if the club can continue."
"I am pleased also for our supporters. They have been so good to me and they lifted the players in such a strong way. No one knows what is happening to the club but all we can do is keep preparing properly for each game and trying to win it. Now we must got to Wembley but who knows if it can happen."
Portsmouth will have to get past a March 15 date in bankruptcy order. It has debts of $115 million.
Saturday's other FA Cup quarterfinal, a London derby between Fulham and Tottenham, ended in a 0-0 tie.
