[CONCACAF CHAMPIONS LEAGUE] If any team is going to break Mexico's stranglehold in the Concacaf Champions League, it could be Marathon of Honduras. It opened the knockout phase of the regional club championship with a 2-0 win over UNAM Wednesday thanks to a pair of penalty kicks.

Walter Martinez and Carlos Mejia scored to the delight of the crowd at the Stadio Olimpico Metropolitano in San Pedro Sula.

No Honduran team has won the Concacaf championship since Olimpia won its second title in 1988.

In Wednesday's other game, Pachuca of Mexico took the early lead at Comunicaciones but Costa RIcan Ronald Fonseca's late goal earned the Guatemalan team a 1-1 tie.

American Jose Francisco Torres did not play for Pachuca.
