After Toronto, which joined MLS in 2007, and Vancouver, which will begin play in 2011, MLS is expanding to a third Canadian city, Montreal, in 2012.
MLS's 19th team was announced at a news conference Friday morning. It will be operated by the Saputo family, who own the Montreal Impact, which won the 2009 USL First Division and now plays in the U.S. Soccer D-2 Pro League.
The Stade Saputo, which opened in 2008, will undergo $22 million in renovations and be expanded to a capacity of 20,000 seats. The expansion team will also play some games at the Olympic Stadium.
