An explosion that could be heard in the media center at Soccer City, the main World Cup stadium, caused concern but was a "controlled explosion" at an explosives factory that South African Police Services spokesman Col. Eugene Opperman described as routine. The factory and manufactures explosives for use in blasting at mines and quarries. Soccer City is amid the gold-mining district on the outskirts of Johannesburg.
