University of Evansville sophomore Abby Guerra was thought to have died in an automobile accident a week ago, but on Saturday it was determined she had survived and was recovering in a Phoenix hospital.

Guerra, 19, was returning from a visit to Disneyland with four high school friends when a blown tire caused the SUV in which they were riding to flip on Interstate 10 about 50 miles west of Phoenix. Guerra's parents were told she had died at the scene, whereas in fact it was another passenger, Marlena Cantu, who had perished.

Instead, Guerra was among the survivors transported to St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix, where she is in critical condition with a collapsed lung, brain injuries, and a broken back.

Guerra started 17 of 18 games as a freshman midfielder, scored two goals and registered one assist. The crash is under investigation and hospital officials have not explained how the mixup occurred.
