[MILK CUP] Omar Salgado, the giant 16-year-old striker out of El Paso, Texas, signed by MLS when he left Mexican club Guadalajara's youth program to join the U.S. under-20 national team, scored the winning goal in the U-20s' 1-0 win over China to open play Monday at the Milk Cup in Northern Ireland.

Salgado, 6-foot-4, was signed to a Generation adidas contract and will enter the 2011 MLS SuperDraft.

Salgado entered the Chivas youth program but reportedly left because his selection to the U.S. U-20s conflicted with the Guadalajara club's Mexico-only player policy.

(Chivas USA's Jesus Padilla was born and raised in California but did play for Guadalajara, which listed him as being born in ... Mexico.)

The USA starting lineup:
18-Zac MacMath (Univ. of Maryland)
6-Perry Kitchen (Univ. of Akron)
22-Gale Agbossoumonde (Braga, Portugal)
2-Zarek Valentin (Univ. of Akron)
5-Greg Garza (Estoril, Portugal)
Sub, 46th minute: 15-Bryan De La Fuente (Chivas USA Academy)
7-Alex Molano (Dinamo Zagreb, Croatia)
Sub, 67th minute: 16-Ernest Nungaray (Monarcas Morelia, Mexico)
14-Fuad Ibrahim (Toronto FC)
10-Francisco Navas Cobo (Houston Dynamo)
Sub, 46th minute: 8-Dillon Powers (Univ. of Notre Dame)
12-Conor Shanosky (George Mason Univ.)
17-Juan Agudelo (New York Red Bulls)
9-Omar Salgado (MLS)
Sub, 88th minute: Adrian Ruelas (Santos Laguna, Mexico)

Other results on Monday in the Elite section:

Denmark 4 Japan 1
Northern Ireland 1 Mexico 1

Next up for the USA: Denmark on Wednesday at the Showgrounds in Coleraine.

I am so glad to see more of the names don't sound like they came out of some wealthy country club polo team. I want soccer players not athletes that can kick a ball around and run fast. Great job Cobo, Salgado, Ruelas, et al.
