Defending Premier League and FA Cup champion Chelsea came out second-best against the team tipped to be its main rival this season as Manchester United posted a 3-1 win in the Community Shield match Sunday at Wembley Stadium.

Mexican international Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, who joined Man United after the World Cup lit up the match as a second-half sub and scuffed
home the winning goal in a fluid display rife with chances and devoid of cautions.

Hernandez, who scored for Man United in its 5-2 win over the MLS All-Stars July 28, converted a ball from Antonio Valencia, finding the net only after misconnecting with his foot and deflecting the delivery off his own head. Coach Alex Ferguson will no doubt deduce that it was the mark of a natural scorer, wrote Kevin McCarra.

This exhibition annually matches the Premier League and FA Cup winners; since Chelsea won both trophies, United earned a spot as league runner-up.
