Tim Vickery profiles Mano Menezes, the latest Gaucho to take charge of the Brazilian national team. While Brazilians yearn for a return to the old days of jogo bonito, the domestic game has become increasingly influenced by the teams and coaches from the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul and their more physical -- and European -- game.
Mano will be at the helm for the first time on Tuesday when Brazil faces the USA, but it is expected to be a more attack-minded team than the team Dunga took to South Africa, where it fell in the quarterfinals. The big difference should be in midfield, where the central players will take on a more prominent role to do the attacking.
Vickery says that the prospects for a change in approach aren't great. He points to the recent national youth teams that have depended on players long on athleticism but short on flair in midfield.
