[MLS] As expected, the expansion Portland Timbers named former Houston Dynamo assistant coach John Spencer as their head coach for their first season in MLS.

Spencer spent the past five years as an assistant coach with the Dynamo after retiring as a player.

After a 14-year  career in Scotland and England, the Scotsman joined the Colorado Rapids in 2001. He scores 37 goals in 88 games before his retirement in 2004.

The Dynamo won MLS titles in its first two seasons with Spencer as its assistant.
