Omar Salgado, the 16-year-old Mexican-American signed by MLS, won't be playing on loan at Vancouver after all. FIFA rules prevent a player under 18 years old from moving from one country to another unless his parents are moving there for non-sporting reasons.

Instead of joining the Whitecaps for the rest of the 2010 D-2 Pro League season, Salgado is in Portland, where he has been working out with the D-2 Timbers. If he stays in Portland for the rest of the year and impresses, it could mean he'll be taken by the Timbers in the SuperDraft.

The Timbers announced the signing of 19-year-old midfielder Kalif Alhassan from Ghana's Liberty Professionals.
