[BRAZIL] A referee who stabbed a player to death in a dispute during a soccer game in northeastern Brazil was being sought by police.

According to a spokesman for the Ceara military police, referee Francisco Chaves killed 35-year-old Jose da Silva and injured his brother Francisco in a fight after he whistled for a foul against the visiting Boa-Fe ("good faith") team from Redencao in its match against Cajueiro from the rural town of Barreira.

After the foul, Francisco da Silva attacked Chaves, who then stabbed Jose da Silva after he came to his brother's side.

“Because it was an amateur game, there was no policing so the referee fled after the crime,” Major Marcos Paulo said.
