Roma coach Ranieri refuses to quit

Roma suffered a humiliating 3-1 loss at home to Swiss club FC Basel in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, but its coach, Claudio Ranieri, won't quit.

"The fact that we're not playing like last year is not because of a lack of preparation," said the veteran coach after the loss left Roma with Basel and Cluj with three points, six behind unbeaten Bayern Munich. "We started badly, our approach was bad, we were too far apart and disjointed."

Ranieri took over struggling Roma early last season and is credited with leading it to second place. Roma's win over Genoa was only its second in seven Serie A games and moved it into a five-way tie for 11th place, still only one point out of relegation zone.

"No, I won't," Ranieri responded when asked if he'll quit. "I'm waiting for the team to react. I asked them how they could play like this after the good game against Genoa."
