[NASL] The North American Soccer League approved the NSC Minnesota Stars and the Atlanta Silverbacks for the 2011 season, upping the number of teams in their application to U.S. Soccer for Division II sanctioning to eight teams.

The NASL's original application included six teams. Five played in the 2010 USSF D-2 Pro League: Montreal Impact (headed to MLS in 2012), Miami FC, Carolina RailHawks, Tampa Bay Rowdies and D-2 Pro League champion Puerto Rico Islanders. FC Edmonton is an expansion team.

There has been a question about whether Minnesota had the financial backing to meet U.S. Soccer's new Division II requirements.

The Silverbacks, formerly of the USL First Division, did not play in 2009.

The NASL also has plans to add San Antonio in 2012.
