Friedel sets Aston Villa record for oldest player

[AMERICANS ABROAD] Brad Friedel, who turns 40 on May 18, set an Aston Villa record as the oldest player when he started in its 3-1 loss to Manchester United Tuesday night in the English Premier League.

Friedel, who was playing in his 253rd straight EPL game, is two days older than defender Ernest Callaghan was when he played for Villa against Grimsby Town on April 12, 1947.

Wayne Rooney scored twice in a game for the first time this season for first-place United, which extended its EPL unbeaten streak to a club record 29 games and maintained a five-point lead over second-place Arsenal.

The Gunners rallied for a 2-1 win over visiting Everton, which had Tim Howard in goal.

Andrey Arshavin and Laurent Koscielny scored in the last 20 minutes to give Arsenal the win.
