[MLS] Toronto FC opened up its preseason campaign with a 1-1 tie against Serbian powerhouse Partizan at the Calista Luxury Resort near Antalya in Turkey on Wednesday. In its first game under new coach Aron Winter, TFC used six trialists and two academy players.

Nana Attakora scored early in the first half for Toronto FC, while Nemanja Tomic had the lone Partizan goal from the penalty spot.

Gianluca Zavarise, who was born and raised in Canada but spent his soccer career in Europe at clubs in Italy, Germany and Greece, started along with 18-year-old Uruguayan Santiago Gonzalez Areco and Dutch strikers Nick Soolsma and Javier Martina.

Two other trialists -- Ghanaian King Gyan Osei and Dutchman Bas Ent -- played in the second half.

Two TFC academy players came on in the second half: Ashtone Morgan and Oscar Cordon.
