Qatar fired Frenchman Bruno Metsu as its national team following its quarterfinal exit from the 2011 Asian Cup it hosted.
After opening with a 2-0 loss to Uzbekistan, Qatar recovered to beat Kuwait and China in the group stage and qualify for the quarterfinals, where it fell to eventual champion Japan, 3-2, in one of the tournament's best games.
"I tried my best in Qatar but luck was not on my side," said Metsu. "Also the coach's job gets very difficult because of the small talent pool available here."
Qatar's squad included players from South America and Africa. Its best player is Uruguayan Sebastian Soria.
