The Philadelphia Union has signed Guatemalan forward Carlos Ruiz, one of the most successful strikers in MLS history, on a free transfer from Greek club Aris.
The 31-year-old played in MLS for Los Angeles (2002-04, 2008) and FC Dallas (2005-07) before stints with Paraguay's Olimpia, Mexico's Puebla and Aris.
He is MLS's 10th all-time leading scorer with 82 goals. In 2002 he scored an MLS record eight postseason goals, including the Galaxy's MLS Cup 2002 gamewinner. He was league MVP and Golden Boot winner with 24 regular-season strikes that year.
Since leaving MLS, Ruiz scored a combined 30 goals for Olimpia, Puebla and Aris. He is also the all-time leading scorer in Guatemalan national team history with 41 goals in 86 appearances.
