Lokomotiv Plovdiv of the Bulgarian league sacrificed a lamb on its home field in the hopes the killing will improve performances during the second half of the season.
A priest known to be an ardent Lokomotiv supporter reportedly performed "a religious rite for the team's prosperity."
Players including captain Zdravko Lazarov and French keeper Florian Lucchini painted the goalposts with the animal’s blood.
The club is in fifth place, 11 behind leaders Litex Lovech.
