Canada will get chance for revenge

[SCOUTING REPORT] It will be short hop across the border for Canadian fans when the USA and Canada meet June 7 at Detroit's Ford Field in their Gold Cup opener. It's been more than 25 years since Canada has beaten the USA and more than 30 years since it's won in an official match, but Canada is eager to renew its border rivalry.

Revenge will be on the Canadians' minds after their disputed 2-1 loss in the semifinals of the 2007 Gold Cup, the last meeting between the two teams. They felt they were robbed of a stoppage-time equalizer when Mexican referee Benito Archundia called Atiba Hutchinson offside on his goal that would have tied the game.

STAR. A reserve on the Canada team that won the 2000 Gold Cup, Dwayne Re Rosario has already played in four Gold Cups. The Toronto FC star had three goals for Canada in 2007 when it reached the semifinals.

COACH. Twice Stephen Hart has taken Canada to the Gold Cup as interim coach. This will be the first time the Trinidad native takes Canada to the finals with the title of head coach. He relishes the opportunity to play the USA.

"At some point, you've got to play teams like the U.S., especially in the Gold Cup," he said. "I'm really looking forward to this game."

HISTORY. The USA has a 13-game unbeaten streak against Canada. Its last loss was 2-0 in a friendly played in 1995. Its last loss in an official game came in 1980 when Canada won, 2-0, in their World Cup 1982 qualifier. The USA leads the overall series with 12 wins, eight losses and nine ties in 29 games.

MOST RECENT LINEUP.
Greece 1 Canada 0, Feb. 9, friendly.
Canada -- Milan Borjan, Adam Straith, Adrian Cann, Dejan Jakovic, Jaime Peters, Will Johnson (Pedro Pacheco, 82), Atiba Hutchinson, Josh Simpson (Tosaint Ricketts, 78), Simeon Jackson (David Edgar, 66), Dwayne De Rosario, Olivier Occean (Rob Friend, 46).

Canada will win that game in Detroit for the same reason the US gave away the match in Chicago: we won't take them seriously. Canada will also be fired up. It's a joke, however, that the game will be played on a narrow artificial surface. By the way, Donovan could have put the question to rest four years ago but he blew it; that match should have been a blowout.
