[UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE] Barcelona's Lionel Messi tied a 60-year-old Spanish soccer scoring record when he scored his 48th goal in all competitions to give the Catalan club a 1-0 win over Shakhtar Donetsk in the second leg of their quarterfinal series in the UEFA Champions League.

The Argentine tied the record set by Athletic Bilbao's Telmo Zarra in the 1950-51 campaign.

He went into the game with 47 goals, matching the mark he reached last season and Hungarian great Ferenc Puskas scored in 1960 and Ronaldo had in 1997.

On top of Messi's 48 goals are his 23 assists, the best in Spain.

His La Liga stats: 29 goals (one more than Cristiano Ronaldo) and 17 assists.

Barcelona has at least 10 more games to play.
