South Korea is the latest country to be hit by a gambling-related game-fixing scandal.

Five K-League players have been arrested and a sixth committed suicide. Two suspected gambling brokers have been arrested. They are alleged to have bought sports lottery tickets and paid 100 million won ($91,700) to a goalkeeper and 120 million won ($11,000) to a midfielder to fix games this season in order to win large sums.

According to newspaper reports, clubs have been trying to hush up game-fixing scandals, preferring to quietly release players implicated in match-rigging. Illicit online gambling sites, many of them operated by crime rings in South Korea and China, make match-fixing very tempting.
