[USA-SPAIN] It's no embarrassment to lose to the reigning World Cup and European champion. But it's another thing not to show up. That's what happened in the first half of the USA's friendly against Spain to the consternation of 64,121 fans at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass., Saturday. The Americans were down 3-0 after 45 minutes, and they went on to suffer a 4-0 defeat, their worst loss in a friendly in more than 25 years.
Even without stars Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Carles Puyol in the starting lineup, the World Cup champions ran all over the USA, which is now winless in its last seven games as home.
Santi Cazorla scored twice in the first half, and Alvaro Negredo and Fernando Torres added goals.
It was 3-0 at the half, but it could have been worse.
David Silva had a legitimate goal called off for offside, Negredo chipped goalie Tim Howard but his shot hit the crossbar and David Villa curled a shot just missed wide before Santi put Spain ahead in the 28th minute.
It was 3-0 at the half, and you would have never guessed the USA had won, 2-0, when the same teams met in the semifinals of the 2009 Confederations Cup.
In Bloemfontein, the Americans shut down the Spaniards' passing game, forcing them wide. But on Saturday, slack marking made it easy for the Spaniards, who finished with a 20-6 edge in shots.
The USA didn't suit up Landon Donovan or Carlos Bocanegra, and Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey, two of the stars of the win over Spain in South Africa didn't come on until the second half.
The Americans weren't as bad in the second half as they were in the first, but they finished with only one shot on goal.
Next up: Canada Tuesday in Detroit to open the Gold Cup.
