Roberto Martinez will be staying at Wigan. The Spanish manager, familiar to U.S. fans as a studio commentator during the 2010 World Cup on ESPN, rejected a chance to talk with English Premier League rival Aston Villa about the opening that became available when Gerard Houllier left for health reasons this month.

Martinez said "has made the decision to honor his commitment to Wigan" after its chairman, Dave Whelan, offered a pay rise and a three-year contract extension that Martinez accepted.

"Over the last two years, the chairman has been very supportive to me and loyal, and now I feel I need to be loyal and supportive back to him,'' Martinez said. "I haven't finished my job at Wigan -- there is much work still to be done.''

Tiny Wigan stayed up in the Premier League, avoiding relegation on the final day of the season.
