[UNDER-17 WORLD CUP] For the second time, Mexico is the under-17 world champion, winning the 2011 championship with a deserved 2-0 win over Uruguay in Sunday's final of the 2011 Under-17 World Cup before more than 105,000 fans at Mexico City's Azteca Stadium. Among the many heroes was Dallas-bred goalie Richard Sanchez.

Captain Antonio Briseno scored on a header in the 31st minute and sub Giovani Casillas added the second goal on a counterattack late in the game.

Elbio Alvarez hit the woodwork for Uruguay, and Sanchez, who was signed as a homegrown player by FC Dallas, made several key saves to stymie the Celeste, which was seeking its first under-17 World Cup title.

Mexicans Julio Gomez, hero of the semifinal win over Germany, Jorge Espericueta and Carlos Fierro finished 1-3 in the balloting for the adidas Golden Ball.

Germany rallied from 3-1 down to beat Brazil, 4-3, in the third-place game.

Mexico had also won the 2005 U17 World Cup hosted by Peru.

these youngsters really played a great game. In just watching , it appeared to me that the Mexico players were just more aggressive in attacking the ball..more gifted in tech skills. I did see early on, some very close shots by Uruguay that narrowly missed going in...as the game progressed , it seemed to me that Mexico clearly were the more talented players overall. They were quicker to the 50-50 balls..Gomez is really a sparkplug for the team...a well deserved win...mho

Honestly speaking, I don't even know how Mexico, and Uruguay were the teams playing for the cup, clearly Germany vs. Brazil was a much better game. I still don't know how Germany lost to Mexico. I missed that game, Mexico must have been firing on all engines, I really thought Germany would've taken the cup...

Germany was second best team. Mexico showed their superiority throughout the tournament. The best won. No doubt that both teams will see much of their players with Euro offers.

Richard Sanchez, described on his Wikipedia page as "American-born Mexican" player. How does that qualify as "home grown"?

Hispanics are obviously taking advantage of playing in USA and getting opportunities in their mother countries. What we should be asking is why these great players are not being strongly pursued by USA before. Don't you think Maragaret?
