"Three times I had to ask [for volunteers] before anyone stepped forward. 'Where are you?' I was thinking, and then a young kid is the first to put her hand up. And Kelly Smith was dying on her feet but she stepped up and took one. You've got to want to take a penalty, but other players should have come forward and they didn't. That's weak, it's cowardice."

-- England coach Hope Powell accuses her players of cowardice after they were eliminated from the Women's World Cup on a penalty-kick tiebreaker by France in the quarterfinals. (The Guardian)

I'm thinking why did she substitute one of her best players, right back Scott, out of the game and leave Smith and White, who were both hobbling, in the game. France had been avoiding their left side of the field all game while Scott was in there. They had no chance to score in the overtime period so all they could do was play D with 9 healthy plays and 2 who were limping.
