[VIRGINIA-RICHMOND] Will Bates scored a pair of goals and dished out two assists to lead No. 22 Virginia to a 7-1 win over Richmond in front of 1,786 spectators in the Cavaliers' home opener at Kloeckner Stadium -- a complete turnaround from their opener when they fell to West Virginia, 1-0.
"We played well tonight and were probably a little wounded after our last game," Virginia head coach George Gelnovatch said. "Give Richmond and Coach Clint Peay credit. They played very hard."
Brian Span, Ari Dimas, Chris Somerville, Kyle McCord and Felipe Libreros also scored their first goals of the season.
Somerville was one of five freshmen Gelnovatch started.
