After playing just 15 games for Wolfsburg since joining it after the 2010 World Cup, German international Arne Friedrich has left the club by mutual consent.
"We regret this and wish him well, of course, for his future," said Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath.
Back problems have prevented Friedrich from training with the team and playing in any of Wolfsburg's six games this season. His contract, which was due to expire in June of next year, has been terminated.
He played his 82nd international for Germany last June but at age 32, he may be forced into retirement. "Both sides have parted amicably," said Friedrich on his Web site. "I want to use the next few weeks to consider carefully how to proceed and which path I will take."
