A riot following a soccer game in the disputed Western Sahara region of Morocco left seven people dead and more than two dozen injured.
The riot began after Chebab, from Mohammedia, beat local club Mouloudia, 3-0, on Sunday. Three people died after being run over by vehicles and two others killed were policemen. Rival fans began throwing stones at each other and then people were attacked by assailants weilding knives and clubs.
The game was played in Dahkla, a city divided between original residents and arrivals from the north following Morocco’s 1975 annexation of the Western Sahara. The two communities have bickered and clashed repeatedly. The Chebab club is based in the north, near Casablanca.
Businesses and vehicles were burned in the riot and 27 people were reported injured.
