[VIRGINIA-MARYLAND] No. 23 Virginia handed No. 2 Maryand its first loss of the season with a 2-1 decision on Friday night in Charlottesville. Will Bates' 10th goal of the season in the 84th minute was the difference.

Casey Townsend tallied his team-leading 12th goal of the season to equalize the match in the 61st minute after the Cavaliers went ahead in the 51st minute on a goal by Ryan Zinkhan.

“We were dealing with some tired bodies and I thought our guys showed the championship fiber that I know we have,” Terrapin coach Sasho Cirovski said.  “We will learn from this game.  Our goal in the beginning wasn’t to go undefeated in the regular season; it was to go undefeated in the postseason.  We still have an opportunity to reach all three of our goals.  We will build from this.”
