England captain Terry accused of racial slur

The English FA and London police launched investigations into whether England captain John Terry racially abused a black opponent, Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand, while playing for Chelsea.

Video footage posted on the Internet appeared to show Terry directing a racial slur at Ferdinand.

Terry claimed that the phrase the footage appeared to show him saying was being taken out of context. “I thought Anton was accusing me of using a racist slur against him,” he said. “I responded aggressively, saying that I never used that term.” He later released a statement saying: “I welcome the FA enquiry and look forward to clearing my name as soon as possible.”

Terry only regained the England captaincy armband this year after being stripped of it by England coach Fabio Capello in February 2010 following allegations that Terry had an affair with the former girlfriend of Wayne Bridge, his then teammate with Chelsea and the national team.
