[OREGON STATE-PORTLAND] Portland, which made the NCAA Women’s Tournament with a 9-9-1 record on the strength of wins over tournament teams like OregonState and Florida State, beat the Beavers in a shootout Friday night in Corvallis and now travel to Tallahassee to face the Seminoles in the second round next Friday.

Portland won 7-6after its game before 1,503 fans at Oregon State ended 1-1.

Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Dees, who replaced senior Hailee DeYoung in goal for the shootout, gave the Pilots the 7-6 lead and then watched Brittany Galindo‘s attempt rattle off the crossbar, sealingthe victory for the Pilots, who were then mobbed by the UP fans who traveled from Portland.

“Our fans made the effort on a rainy Friday night to make this feel like a homegame,” UP coach Garrett Smith said.

Oregon State scored first in the 52nd minute when Justyne Freudburied Brittney Oljar‘s cross.

The Beavers, who had a 16-9 edge in shots, look to add to their lead but DeYoung produced two big saves before Ellen Parker fed Amanda Frisbie for the equalizer in the 69th minute.

“I think the girls tonight played a greatmatch,” OSU coach Linus Rhode said. “We controlled a lot of the possession. We outshot the University of Portland. But at the end of the day youhave to put the ball in the back of the net.”
