Last Saturday, Spain fell, 1-0, to England at Wembley that marked its fourth friendly loss since Spain won the 2010 World Cup. On Tuesday, the world champs came close to another defeat, needing a David Villa stoppage time to tie at Costa Rica, 2-2.
Costa Rica took a 2-0 lead by halftime with goals by Randal Brenes and Joel Campbell. Villa struck in the 83rd before hitting the equalizer at the finish.
"We did not play well, admittedly, but in the second half I think it was the opposite," said Spain midfielder Andre Iniesta. "The good news is the reaction of the team.
"They were much better in the first half and we did not live up to our status [of world champions] in those 45 minutes. As part of this positive reaction in the second half, the team created chances and we turned it around."
