Why are YOU begrudging them the opportunity to obtain a university degree? You see, being a student-athlete requires a great deal of dedication, concentration, and determination to being able to manage the high demands of being a full-time student enrolling and completing a minum of twelve university units per semester to be athletically eligible, in addition to devoting between 20-30 hours per week for training and games. Also, you see, there is a value in being a student-athlete because the number of athletes that eventually sign a professional athletic contract is very small, so if one suffers an athletic/sports career-ending injury, then aone can have his/her fall-back plan on having a professional career in his/her chosen academic field. In sum, I take my hats off to those MLS teams that boast that their "Academy players" are in fact and deed have signed with D1 programs - though I'd like to see more MLS teams listed as well as how many are going to D2, 3, and NAIA, or Community-Junior Colleges!

Oh, and I forgot to mention that the Sounders Coach, Sigi Schmid himself was also a student-athlete at UCLA (eventually he was also the head coach there) and I am pleased to say that I know him well when he was an undergrad and I a graduate volunteer team assistant. I also know that he values being a student-athlete and I am proud that that his team has the larger number of Academy players going to university!
