[AMERICANS ABROAD] Jozy Altidore was the only American to play and come out on the winning side in the first leg of the Europa League quarterfinals. AZ, unbeaten in all competitions this season, beat Valencia of Spain, 2-1.

Altidore started and played 77 minutes. Two minutes after he went off, Maarten Martens won the game for AZ.

Steve Cherundolo
and Jermaine Jones both went the distance, but their German clubs both lost to Spanish clubs.

Cherundolo's Hannover 96 fell to Atletico Madrid, 2-1, on a late goal. Jones' Schalke dropped a 4-2 loss to Athletic Bilbao, conceding three goals in the final 20 minutes.
