Without even considering the Champions League, where it has notched 31 goals, La Liga leader Real Madrid is scoring at an unprecedented rate. In league play, it is on pace to average more goalsper game than any team in Europe’s top five leagues (England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain) since World War II, reports Joshua Robinson.
Most league champions of the last decade have averaged between 2 to 2.5 goals per game. In France and Italy, they have been a little lower. In Spain, it’s slightlyhigher.
But Real Madrid is blowing past every recent team’s productivity. With 100 goals through 30 league games, the club’s average is a staggering 3.33 goals per game. No team has evencracked a rate of three goals a game since 1960.
The best of the last decade include: Barcelona (2.76 in 2008-2009), Chelsea (2.71 in 2009-2010), and Real Madrid (2.68 in each of the lasttwo seasons). This season’s Barcelona team is averaging 2.87 goals.
