Spain's Puyol sidelined, Ukraine's goalie worries

[EURO 2012 COUNTDOWN] Shaggy-haired defender Carles Puyol, one of the keys to Spain's Euro 2008 and 2010 World Cup titles, will almost certainly miss Euro 2012 after needing surgery on his right knee that will sideline him for around six weeks.

Puyol, 34, hurt his knee in Barcelona's 4-0 win over Espanyol and will have the operation next Saturday. He has 99 caps for Spain and scored the winning goal in the 1-0 victory over Germany at the 2010 World Cup.

Co-host Ukraine's big worry is in goal, which has been depleted with the loss of its top three keepers.  Coach Oleg Blokhin was forced to call up two uncapped goalies, a 36-year-old keeper with one cap and fourth keeper who has spent much of the backup at Shakhtar Donetsk among the 26 players named for his preliminary squad for Euro 2012.

Olexandr Shovkovskiy and Andriy Dykana are both injured, while Oleksandr Rybka is suspended for using a banned diuretic.

Shakhtar Donetsk's Andriy Pyatov is the most experienced with 24 appearances for Ukraine but lost his starting job at Shakhtar after starting the last four seasons.

Oleksandr Goryainov, 36, has one cap to his name, but that's one more than either Maxym Koval or Oleksandr Bandura has.
