The defending champion Los Angeles Galaxy broke its seven-game winless streak with a 1-0 home win over Portland on Sunday.
"I’m not going to make the statement that it looked like last year yet,” Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said. “If it looked like last year, we’d have a few more wins under our belt. It’s progress and hopefully we can move forward.”
The Galaxy's first win since April 21 moved it out of last place in the Western Conference with 14 points, one more than Portland and FC Dallas.
"We got back to doing things that make a difference,” Galaxy captain Landon Donovan said. “It wasn’t pretty but we made a lot of real good plays on both sides of the ball that make a difference. I can’t look at any one guy and say ‘He didn’t perform well and he didn’t give it everything he had.’ It’s a good building block. Let’s not get carried away, it’s one win, but a good win and everyone feels good about it.”
