Didier Deschamps will succeed his former teammate Laurent Blanc as French national team coach. Blanc resigned after France was eliminated from Euro 2012 in the
quarterfinals with a loss to Spain.
The 43-year-old Deschamps captained France to the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000 titles. Blanc was also a member of those teams.
Deschamps had asked Marseille to be released from his post on May 23, although he still had two years left on his contract. He coached Marseille since 2009 -- winning the 2010 league title and three French League Cups -- after stints with Monaco and Juventus.
He led Monaco to Ligue 1 and UEFA Champions League runner-up finishes and Juventus to the 2007 Serie B title.
