[VIRGINIA-PENN STATE] Freshman Mallory Weber was dangerous from the get-go and eventually scored two second-half goals on breakaways, including the game-winner in the 75th minute, to lead No. 8 Penn State to a 3-1 win at No. 7 Virginia.

"I am really happy with this group," said Lions coach Erica Walsh. "This is a great start to the season for us. We got some great performances from our freshmen. It was big having them step up for us tonight."

Virginia goalkeeper Danielle DeLisle twice denied Weber in the first half and the freshman from Novi, Mich. grazed the crossbar late in the first period, but she broke free to score on two breakaways in the second half, the first 22 seconds after the Cavs' Makenzy Doniak scored on a header off a corner kick to tie the game up.

Redshirt junior Tani Costa, who is coming off a torn ACL last year, had put Penn State ahead in the first half.

Both teams were missing key players in Japan for the Under-20 Women's World Cup, where Virginia coach Steve Swanson is coaching the USA.

“We are disappointed with the result," said Cavs assistant coach Ron Raab. "We gave up a couple of goals that I thought were preventable on our part. When you play an opponent as quality as Penn State, they will make you pay for your mistakes."

The loss snapped Virginia's 21-game home-opening winning streak.
